The Mexican Army (Ejército Mexicano) has a long historical association with the iconic Colt M1911 pistol, one of the most influential military sidearms of the 20th century. Designed by John Moses Browning and officially adopted by the United States Army in 1911, the M1911 quickly gained an international reputation for reliability, durability and stopping power. Mexico was among the nations that adopted and produced variants of this legendary pistol.

During the early and mid-20th century, the Mexican military used the M1911 platform through both imports and domestic production. These pistols were manufactured by Colt’s Manufacturing Company and delivered to Mexico under government contracts. These pistols were valued for their effectiveness and rugged battlefield performance.

In addition to imported models, Mexico also produced its own versions of the M1911 through La Dirección General de Industria Militar (DGIM), the military manufacturing arm of the Mexican government. These domestically produced pistols often carried markings identifying them as property of the Mexican armed forces, such as “Ejército Mexicano,” along with serial numbers and official crests.

Mexican Army 1911s became widely recognized among collectors due to their distinctive roll marks, historical significance and limited production compared to U.S. military models. Many original examples show signs of extensive service, reflecting decades of use by military personnel and federal forces throughout Mexico.

Today, Mexican Army-marked Colt 1911 pistols remain highly sought after by firearms historians and collectors. They represent a unique intersection of Mexican military history and the enduring legacy of the Colt 1911 platform, an enduring symbol of craftsmanship, reliability and martial tradition
